BioWare has announced that it will not be developing story expansions for its latest title, Dragon Age: The Veilguard. The studio is now redirecting its full resources towards the next installment in the Mass Effect series. Released on October 31 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S/X, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has seen remarkable success, becoming the most popular game ever launched by BioWare on Steam.

No DLC Plans for Dragon Age: The Veilguard

In a discussion with Rolling Stone, Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s creative director, John Epler, confirmed that the studio will not pursue downloadable expansions for the title. He indicated that BioWare’s “full attention” is now on developing the next Mass Effect game, though specific details about this project remain undisclosed.

During the interview, Epler also spoke about the potential for remastering the first three Dragon Age titles for contemporary gaming systems, similar to the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which offers an enhanced version of the original Mass Effect trilogy. While he expressed a desire for the Dragon Age games to receive similar treatment, Epler acknowledged that the process would pose significant challenges.

“I think I’m one of about maybe 20 people left at BioWare who’s actually used Eclipse,” Epler noted. “It’s something that’s not going to be as easy as Mass Effect, but we do love the original games. Never say never, I guess that’s what it comes down to.”

The initial two Dragon Age installments were developed using a custom engine known as Eclipse, while the Mass Effect trilogy utilized the widely adopted Unreal Engine, facilitating a smoother remastering process for the Legendary Edition.

The forthcoming chapter in the Mass Effect series, which has yet to receive an official title, was teased during The Game Awards in 2020. However, BioWare has withheld further information about the project.

Recently, Michael Gamble, BioWare’s executive producer who heads the team on the upcoming Mass Effect game, stated that the new title will maintain the mature themes characteristic of the original trilogy and will feature a photorealistic art style.

Since its launch, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has topped Steam’s Top Sellers list, making it BioWare’s most successful title on the platform. Within just one day, the game attracted over 70,000 peak concurrent players, marking the biggest Steam launch in the company’s history.
