Are you receiving missed calls, messages, or WhatsApp calls from international numbers such as +254, +84, or +63? Experts recommend that you “report and block” these numbers.

This advisory comes from the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs through the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), aimed at protecting the public from potential cybercrime victims.

Data analysis and forensics experts, collaborating with the government to combat cybercrime, inform that these international numbers primarily originate from countries like Singapore, Vietnam, and Malaysia, and may be linked to attempts to steal financial information.

“This represents a new trend in cybercrime,” said a cyber intelligence and digital forensics expert who wished to remain anonymous. “Individuals from all walks of life in India are increasingly getting calls and missed calls from numbers starting with +254, +84, +63, +1(218), among others. Some have unfortunately fallen victim to these scams, and the frequency of such incidents is rising.”

Another expert in the field asserted that individuals who receive missed call alerts or WhatsApp calls from suspicious international numbers should take immediate action by reporting and blocking them.

“Promoting awareness about cyber hygiene is crucial in law enforcement, and this initiative is commendable,” the official noted.

Experts indicate that these calls can occur at any hour of the day or night.

“People of all demographics, be it private employees, business owners, retired government officials, or students, receive these calls often, usually between 6 am to 7 am or late at night. It’s essential to be vigilant about such communications,” they emphasized.

One reported message from a number starting with +243 read: “Hello, my name is Allena, may I take a few minutes of your time?” This message went on to discuss opportunities related to the new 5G era, urging the recipient not to miss out.

If anyone encounters a cyber-attack, they can report it through the cybercrime.gov.in website. Experts noted that with the I4C’s assistance, focused efforts are underway to mitigate the cybercrime threat.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the operations of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) in March, emphasizing its role in fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a cyber-resilient nation.

Shah remarked that the I4C plays a vital role in facilitating efficient coordination among various agencies and states in the ongoing fight against cybercrime.

Established in 2018, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre has successfully recovered over Rs 12 crore for victims of cybercrime.

The I4C has also introduced a specific system for reporting and managing cyber citizen and fraud incidents.
