Ubisoft announced over the weekend that Assassin’s Creed Shadows has surpassed two million players. The action-RPG, set in Japan, attracted one million players on its launch day and has managed to double that figure within just two days of its release. The game became available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X on March 20.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Surpasses 2 Million Players

In a Saturday update on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Ubisoft revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows had achieved the significant milestone of two million players. The company noted that the game has outperformed the initial launches of both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

The player count reflects the total across all supported platforms, including PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Connect, and other storefronts, as well as PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. Additionally, the game is accessible at no extra cost through the Ubisoft+ subscription service. Ubisoft has yet to disclose sales figures for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

While specific player numbers are not disclosed by PlayStation or Xbox, the concurrent player count on Steam offers a glimpse into the game’s launch performance. According to SteamDB, the game reached a peak of 64,825 concurrent players on the platform.

Achieving one million players on launch day, Assassin’s Creed Shadows also topped Steam’s Top Sellers chart shortly after its debut.

In February, Ubisoft indicated that pre-orders for the game were on par with those of 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which stands as the second most successful title in the franchise’s history.

This success is particularly crucial for Ubisoft, which is facing financial difficulties. The company’s stock price dropped 40 percent in 2024 following disappointing performances of major releases, including Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws. In light of these challenges, the founding Guillemot family has been in discussions with Tencent and other potential investors regarding a buyout option.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows experienced two delays prior to its March 20 launch date. Originally scheduled for November 2024, it was first postponed to February 14, 2025, after Star Wars Outlaws underperformed. The game was delayed again before its final release across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.
