Apple is set to enhance Siri with more sophisticated capabilities beginning next year, according to a prominent journalist. The company’s artificial intelligence (AI)-powered voice assistant was originally slated to undergo significant upgrades in 2024 with the launch of iOS 18. However, many of those enhancements were put on hold due to Apple’s struggle to keep pace with rival AI technologies. Now, advanced features for Siri, including a novel app intents system, are anticipated to be introduced to Apple devices early next year.
Anticipated Siri Upgrades in 2026
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg alluded to the forthcoming enhancements for Siri in the latest edition of the Power On newsletter. According to Gurman, the long-awaited revisions to Siri will be complemented by the introduction of an App Intents feature, which was once expected to debut with iOS 18.
This framework will allow developers to integrate their apps’ unique functionalities into broader system-level experiences, which include Shortcuts, Siri, Spotlight, Widgets, and more, across various platforms. With the addition of App Intents and Apple Intelligence, Siri will be capable of recommending actions related to apps, thereby assisting users in discovering new functionalities and taking actions seamlessly.
Gurman highlighted that this revamped system for Siri would enable users to perform tasks like finding a specific photo, editing it, and sharing it, all through voice commands. Additionally, users will be able to comment on Instagram posts, navigate e-commerce platforms to add items to their carts, and log into services without any need for screen interaction.
“Essentially, Siri could control your apps with the same precision you would, within their respective interfaces,” added Gurman.
Reports suggest that Apple is currently trialing the updated Siri with various third-party applications, including those from Amazon, Facebook, Temu, Threads, Uber, WhatsApp, and YouTube, alongside some gaming platforms. However, Gurman pointed out that Apple is considering restrictions on some of Siri’s improved functionalities in banking and health applications to minimize the risk of critical errors previously noted during internal testing.
These enhancements are expected to roll out in the spring alongside the iOS 26.4 update. Notably, the company released the iOS 18.4 update on April 1, with a similar timeframe anticipated for the iOS 26 release in 2026.
