While Apple has not officially acknowledged its plans for a foldable iPhone, recent insights and forecasts regarding its development and launch timeline have emerged. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that Apple supplier Foxconn is set to commence work on the foldable iPhone project later this year. The display for the device is likely to be sourced from Samsung Display, although several specifications for key components remain under review. The foldable iPhone is anticipated to debut in 2026 and is expected to be priced at a premium level.
Potential Collaboration with Samsung Display
In a recent update shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), Kuo discussed the progress in production for Apple’s foldable iPhone. He indicated that Foxconn aims to begin the project by late Q3 or early Q4 of this year. According to Kuo, critical component specifications, including the hinge, are still being finalized.
The forthcoming device is expected to feature a foldable display manufactured by Samsung. Reports suggest that Samsung Display is gearing up to produce between seven to eight million flexible panels specifically for this iPhone model. Kuo cautioned that due to the limited production timeframe in 2026, panel shipments may not reach full capacity during that year.
Furthermore, Kuo speculated that Apple might have placed orders for approximately 15 to 20 million units of the foldable iPhone to meet anticipated demand over its projected lifecycle of two to three years. Mass production is expected to begin in the latter half of 2026, with Apple likely to ship several million units annually throughout 2027 and 2028, a strategy possibly influenced by the device’s high price point.
The iPhone Fold is projected to be unveiled in the fall of 2026, although Kuo noted that plans could evolve as the project progresses.
The anticipated foldable smartphone is rumored to feature a 5.5-inch external display and a larger 7.8-inch internal screen when opened. Estimates suggest the starting price for the base model in the U.S. could be around $2,300 (approximately Rs. 1,99,000), with initial availability likely to be limited. Additionally, the device is speculated to include a metal hinge.
