Apple is reportedly working on incorporating cameras into its smartwatch lineup, according to insights from an experienced journalist. The company, based in Cupertino, is considering placing a camera near the crown and button on the side of the Apple Watch Ultra, potentially allowing users to scan objects in their environment for information. The standard Apple Watch series is also expected to receive similar enhancements. This move is aligned with Apple’s goal of developing a wearable device capable of artificial intelligence (AI) that can “see” the outside world and provide pertinent information.

Cameras on the Apple Watch

The revelations stem from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who shared details in the latest edition of the Power On newsletter. Gurman emphasized Apple’s intentions for both the Watch Ultra and its standard series, aiming to integrate AI more thoroughly into its smartwatch ecosystem. The company is said to be focusing on Visual Intelligence, which would enrich the devices’ capabilities to recognize objects and settings instantly, leveraging Apple’s proprietary AI technology.

In its implementation, the standard Apple Watch may feature cameras built into the display, akin to the front-facing camera found on iPhones. The location for the camera on the Apple Watch Ultra is speculated to be situated between the crown and the side button. Because the Watch Ultra is thicker than the standard series, this model might offer greater flexibility for the integration.

The findings suggest that users could potentially use their Apple Watch Ultra to scan items directly in front of them. In contrast, users of the standard series would likely need to turn their wrists to engage in similar scanning functions. While specific features have yet to be formally announced, it is indicated that the smartwatch will not support FaceTime functionality. This limitation arises from practical considerations, such as the small size of the smartwatch screen for video conferencing purposes, as well as the need for users to hold the device throughout a call.

Although it would not be particularly challenging to port the FaceTime application to the Apple Watch, Gurman notes that making it functional on such a small device is considered a “far-fetched idea.”
