Apple is set to make its advanced language models, which drive its Apple Intelligence features, accessible to third-party developers for incorporation into their own applications, according to a report by Bloomberg. The company plans to initiate this rollout with smaller on-device models through a software development kit (SDK), taking a cue from Google’s upcoming Gemini Nano AI APIs, expected to be unveiled at today’s Google I/O event, as noted by Android Authority.
Currently, developers have limited access to certain functionalities of Apple Intelligence, including AI Writing Tools that offer summary and rewrite capabilities, as well as the option to integrate the company’s Image Playground generator into their applications. Initially, the SDK is not expected to provide access to Apple’s cloud-based models, and it may not significantly impact applications utilizing their own models, such as ChatGPT, Grok, or Anthropic.
Plans for this new developer access are expected to be highlighted at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) slated for June 9th. According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, this initiative is anticipated to be a key focus of the event, alongside a significant redesign of iOS, macOS, and iPadOS, referred to as “Solarium,” which aims to create a more cohesive operating system experience similar to that of the Vision Pro.
