Apple is advancing its capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) by exploring innovative methods to analyze user data patterns while safeguarding privacy. The tech giant based in Cupertino announced on Monday that these new differential privacy techniques will enable it to gather aggregated insights without compromising individual user privacy. The focus will be on understanding usage trends and analyzing data embeddings, which are crucial for enhancing its text generation models and Genmoji functionality. Importantly, Apple stated that data collection will only occur from devices that have opted to share Device Analytics.

In a recent publication on its Machine Learning Research platform, Apple outlined these techniques aimed at refining various features within its Apple Intelligence suite. The company’s AI performance has faced criticism recently, with officials suggesting that their commitment to ethical data sourcing and pretraining practices has hindered their AI development.

Apple asserts that its generative AI models rely on synthetic data—information created by other AI models or digital sources, rather than human input. While this approach helps impart valuable knowledge to large language models (LLMs), it may also lead to outputs that lack the nuance and style typical of human communication, often resulting in bland or generic responses, a phenomenon referred to as AI slop.

To address these challenges and enhance the quality of its AI-generated outputs, Apple is investigating ways to leverage user data without directly accessing any personal information. This initiative, termed “differential privacy,” allows for data analysis while maintaining user confidentiality.

For its Genmoji feature, Apple intends to apply differentially private methods to identify prevalent prompts and patterns among users who have consented to share Device Analytics data. The company asserts that this approach will mathematically guarantee that unique or uncommon prompts remain undiscovered and cannot be traced back to individual users.

This data collection will enable Apple to assess which types of prompts most accurately reflect genuine user engagement. The goal is to identify prompts that lead to gratifying results and to understand user interactions that necessitate additional prompting for optimal outcomes. One example highlighted in the publication discussed the models’ effectiveness in generating multiple entities.

Looking ahead, Apple plans to broaden this methodology across its Image Playground, Image Wand, Memories Creation, and Writing Tools within Apple Intelligence, as well as in Visual Intelligence for upcoming product releases.

Another significant area of focus for Apple is text generation, where a slightly different approach is being utilized compared to Genmoji. To evaluate the effectiveness of its tools in generating emails, Apple developed a series of emails covering common themes and created multiple variations for each topic. These variations were then represented through key dimensions such as language, subject matter, and length, referred to as embeddings.

These embeddings were shared with a select group of users who opted in to Device Analytics and were subsequently compared to a sample of their emails. “Thanks to these protective measures, Apple can generate synthetic data that reflects overall trends without accessing or analyzing any personal email content,” the company explained.

This method allows Apple to gain valuable insights into the preferred language and style of emails while ensuring that individual email content remains inaccessible. Currently, Apple is applying this approach to enhance its text generation capabilities in emails and is considering its implementation for email summaries in future updates.
