Founded in 1937, American Science & Surplus has continuously broadened its range of products and its customer base. Meyer, who has dedicated over 40 years to the organization, reflected on his diverse experiences. “I have done nearly every job at this company,” he stated. “From cleaning floors to driving trucks, running warehouse and tent sales, and serving as both store manager and assistant manager—I’ve truly covered every aspect of this business during my 41 years.”

The store’s offerings have significantly evolved, surpassing its original focus on lenses and lab equipment. Today, patrons can explore sections dedicated to science toys and craft supplies inspired by Etsy. However, some previously popular areas have declined. “Back in the early 2000s, I loved browsing the extensive telescope section, where staff was always eager to assist customers with their inquiries about different models. Now, telescopes occupy just a small corner of the store, and purchases are infrequent. Customers often come in with questions, only to buy their telescopes online later,” Meyer noted.

American Science & Surplus embodies the maker ethos, showcasing a vast selection of motors, switches, cables, tools, and connectors. Meyer expressed enthusiasm about seeing customers’ projects, stating, “It’s always exciting to receive photos of their creations and see how they are inspired by what we offer here.”

The ambiance of the store is reminiscent of the golden era of Radio Shack, which once operated nearby in the same shopping center as American Science & Surplus in the Jefferson Park area of Chicago. Meyer recalled instances where Radio Shack directed shoppers to his store for items they didn’t carry. Once, he shared, “Radio Shack sent a customer to us after informing him that an item was out of stock. Although we didn’t have it, one of our associates remembered that Radio Shack did. He walked the customer back and retrieved the part directly for him.”
