Amazon Web Services (AWS) is developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool designed to generate code in real-time, known internally as Kiro. This innovative project leverages AI agents to handle complex coding tasks, offering a comprehensive solution for developers. Kiro is expected to be able to write code, design user interfaces (UIs), identify and rectify bugs, as well as optimize existing code. It is reported to have broader capabilities than a previous project called Amazon Q, and plans are in place for its launch in June.

Amazon Is Reportedly Working on Coding Agent Kiro

A recent report by Business Insider highlights AWS’s plans for Kiro, an AI system that can perform end-to-end coding tasks. Through an internal document obtained by the publication, it was revealed that Kiro has the ability to utilize AI agents to interpret user prompts and interact with databases, generating code in “near real-time.”

Kiro is being designed as both a web and desktop application capable of connecting to various first-party and third-party AI agents. This functionality positions it as an AI agent orchestrator, allowing it to access a wider range of tools beyond those developed by Amazon. According to the report, the application will also interface with knowledge bases and extensions to enrich its capability in task completion.

While the report left some details vague, it suggested that Kiro could potentially connect to code repositories, enabling it to comprehend and learn from existing code bases. This adaptability allows Kiro to write code that aligns with established coding styles. Furthermore, the tool is said to support multimodal input, meaning developers can provide visual diagrams and contextual information to facilitate its coding processes.

The anticipated software development tool promises a diverse array of functionalities. Reports indicate it may be capable of creating technical documents, identifying and remedying bugs, and optimizing code for specific applications. However, the report did not specify the programming languages Kiro will support or its ability to convert code from one language to another.

In addition, the report indicates that Amazon is exploring trends in “vibe coding,” a practice that allows developers to oversee the process of code creation by generative AI, rather than writing the code themselves. This shifts the developer’s role to that of a director, guiding the project and transforming their vision into a tangible product.
