Last week, Amazon unveiled a new software update for several of its recent Kindle devices. The company’s release notes allude to enhancements such as “performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements.” However, the update introduces significant improvements in text and line spacing, which enhance readability and accessibility for a wider range of users, as noted by The eBook Reader.
The 5.18.3 update is compatible with the Kindle Scribe, Kindle Color, as well as the 11th and 12th generation of the basic Kindle and Paperwhite models. Amazon is gradually distributing the update through its automatic system. Users who prefer immediate access can download the specific update file tailored to their device, transfer it to their Kindle, and apply a manual update following the provided instructions from Amazon.
Previously, users had only three basic line spacing options accessible under the “Layout” menu, which included margin size adjustments. With the current update, users can now find enhanced spacing settings by selecting the “Font” button. This takes them to a dedicated page where they can customize line spacing, paragraph spacing, word spacing, and character spacing, with the option to revert to default settings.
The ability to personalize text and line spacing on Kindles has historically lagged compared to some of Amazon’s competitors in the e-reader market. While newer Kobo devices still provide more options for font size, line spacing, and margins, they lack specific controls for paragraph, word, and character spacing. With this latest update, recent Kindle models emerge as a favorable choice for individuals with visual impairments or those managing dyslexia.
