Amazon Prime Video is unveiling a new feature that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to offer users AI-generated dubbing for select content. The streaming service announced this pilot program on Wednesday, which aims to provide dubbed versions of titles that previously lacked this feature in certain countries and regions. While the initial selection of movies and shows will be limited, Amazon plans to broaden its AI dubbing service to include more titles in the near future.

Prime Video Tests AI Dubbing for Movies and Shows

In a recent post shared on its newsroom page, the company stated that the AI-powered dubbing initiative was designed to enhance accessibility for a wider audience. During this testing phase, Prime Video will feature AI-assisted dubbing in English and Latin American Spanish. However, the timeline for introducing additional languages remains undisclosed.

To start, the AI dubbing feature will be applied to 12 licensed films and series, which include titles such as the 2003 Spanish animated film “El Cid: La Leyenda,” the 2016 fantasy drama “Mi Mamá Lora,” and the 2018 indie film “Long Lost.”

Notably, this AI dubbing process adopts a hybrid model rather than complete automation. Prime Video emphasized that the final dubbed product will undergo scrutiny and refinement by localization experts, ensuring high standards of quality control. The company has yet to disclose which large language models (LLMs) are being implemented for this new feature.

“AI-aided dubbing is exclusively available for titles that currently lack dubbing support, and we are excited to innovate in making series and movies more accessible and enjoyable for our viewers,” stated Raf Soltanovich, Vice President of technology for Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.

The use of AI in dubbing has gained traction as a practical application of the technology. In December 2024, YouTube announced an expansion of its auto-dubbing feature to encompass educational and informational videos, enabling creators who produce content in English to have it automatically dubbed into a variety of languages including French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Amazon Prime Video has been gradually integrating AI capabilities into its platform. Last year, the service introduced an AI-powered X-Ray Recaps feature, allowing viewers to receive spoiler-free text summaries of shows that guide them to pick up right where they left off, ensuring they don’t miss any details.
