Avowed, the action-RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment, has been officially delayed, now targeting a release date of February 18, 2025, for PC and current-gen Xbox consoles. At the ongoing Gamescom 2024 event, the developer provided new insights, indicating that the game will operate at 30fps on both the Xbox Series X and Series S. Additionally, Obsidian noted that Avowed will feature multiple possible endings, with the total reaching double digits.

Performance Specifications for Xbox Series S/X

During the Iron Lords Podcast at Gamescom in Los Angeles, Obsidian detailed Avowed’s performance on the Xbox Series S/X. Art Director Matt Hansen stated in a YouTube segment of the podcast that the studio aims for a consistent 30fps on the RPG for these consoles.

“We are core targeting 30fps, bare minimum,” Hansen remarked when asked about the performance metrics for the game’s console versions. “That’s the expectation.”

According to the developers, 60fps is not a necessary requirement for a first-person single-player game. They believe that maintaining a 30fps output allows for enhancements in graphical fidelity and lighting effects.

“It’s a trade-off we opted to make relatively early, and we’re really happy with it. The game’s running pretty smooth for how visually dense it is, and that was always our goal,” Hansen explained. He also mentioned that detailed performance specifications are still being finalized. “It’s one of the last things you do,” he added.

Avowed marks another title within Xbox’s first-party lineup launching with a 30fps cap. Both Bethesda’s Starfield and Arkane Austin’s Redfall released at the same frame rate last year, although both titles later received patches that allowed for 60fps performance on consoles. Recently, a Starfield update provided 60fps support for the lower-end Xbox Series S.

Exploring Avowed’s Endings

In a separate discussion with IGN at Gamescom, Avowed’s game director Carrie Patel affirmed the inclusion of various possible endings in the game. “I can tell you our ending slides number in the double digits, and you can end up with a lot of different combinations of them,” Patel revealed.

She added, “I mean, this is an Obsidian game, so your ending is really the sum total of your choices across the game, across a lot of pieces of content, depending on what you encountered and what you did when you found it.”

Originally scheduled for release in late 2024, Avowed’s delay positions it for a clearer launch amid a competitive gaming landscape. The game is now confirmed to debut on February 18, 2025, across PC, Xbox Series S/X, and Game Pass.
