Sony has announced the discontinuation of Concord, an online hero-shooter that debuted last month on PlayStation 5 and PC. The game struggled to capture player interest, as reflected in discouraging player numbers on Steam. Following disappointing sales and a decline in active users, the company revealed that Concord will be taken offline on September 6. Players who purchased the game on either platform will be eligible for full refunds, as confirmed by Sony.

Concord to Disconnect

In a blog post shared on the official PlayStation site, Firewalk Studios, the developers behind Concord, stated that the game would cease operations on September 6. While no specific plans were disclosed regarding the game’s future, the studio mentioned that it is “exploring options.”

“To the fans of Concord — we have been attentive to your feedback since the launch on PlayStation 5 and PC, and we sincerely thank everyone who has embarked on this journey with us aboard the Northstar. Your support and the engaged community that has arisen around the game have been invaluable,” said Ryan Ellis, game director at Firewalk Studios.

“Nevertheless, while certain aspects of the experience resonated with players, we recognize that other elements of the game and our launch did not meet expectations. Consequently, we have made the decision to take the game offline starting September 6, 2024, while we explore new directions that could better serve our players,” he added.

Firewalk confirmed that all sales will end for Concord on both PS5 and PC, and full refunds will be issued to players who purchased the game. “For those who bought the game on PlayStation 5 through the PlayStation Store or PlayStation Direct, refunds will be processed back to your original payment method,” the studio stated.

Refunds for purchases made via Steam and the Epic Games Store will also be processed in the coming days, and these platforms will notify customers once their refunds are completed. After refunds are issued, players will lose access to the game.

Concord was released on August 23 following an open beta period that indicated minimal player interest. The first-person shooter’s peak concurrent player count on Steam reached just 697 — lower than the peak for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which has been widely criticized. Currently, only 45 users are actively playing Concord on Steam.

As an online hero-shooter priced at $40 and lacking a battle pass system, Concord faced stiff competition from several free-to-play alternatives like Overwatch 2. An IGN report, referencing industry analysts, estimated that Concord sold around 10,000 copies on Steam and an additional 15,000 on the PlayStation Store.
