Threads is set to introduce a long-awaited feature that many users have been requesting since its launch last year. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced that the platform is currently testing a new section called Today’s topics, which will showcase subjects with the highest engagement levels. This feature utilizes an artificial intelligence (AI) system and provides real-time updates. At present, it is available exclusively to a select group of users in the United States.
Zuckerberg shared in a Threads post that once the feature is finalized, it will be expanded to additional countries and available in more languages. Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, also elaborated on how the Today’s topics feature will function. He explained, “Today’s topics on Threads will appear on the search page and in the For You feed, determined by our AI systems based on current user engagement on Threads.” Screenshots demonstrating the new feature were also shared by Mosseri.
The new addition to the search page bears some resemblance to the Trending page on X (formerly Twitter), although there are notable distinctions. Unlike X, trending topics on Threads do not require hashtags or tags and are displayed as plain text, accompanied by a heading and a prominent post related to the topic. According to Mosseri, both the headings and the topics are curated by AI, eliminating the need for users to decipher complicated hashtags that might not accurately represent the content.
Another component of Today’s topics can be found on the For You page, where it is presented in a separate section in a carousel format, akin to how posts appear on Instagram. In the screenshots released by Mosseri, the headings and top posts are arranged in small rectangular boxes.
Threads has also begun testing another feature that allows users to bookmark posts, similar to functionalities offered by both Instagram and X. Users can easily save a post by tapping the Save button, which adds it to the Saved section accessible through the icon displaying two horizontal lines in the user’s profile.
