Instagram is currently exploring a new feature for its iOS platform that would enable users without the app to view Reels directly within the application’s interface. This initiative utilizes App Clips, a functionality introduced for iPhones with the iOS 14 update in 2021. App Clips serve as a limited preview that allows users to engage with specific features prior to committing to a full application download. A similar offering exists for TikTok, which permits non-users to access its short-form video content.
According to a report from 9to5Mac, an App Clip has been identified in Instagram app version 319.0.2, available to beta testers via TestFlight. This feature enables iOS users to watch Reels in Instagram’s native user interface rather than in a web browser. For instance, if someone shares a Reel link through iMessage, users can now view it as they would in the Instagram app itself, with no requirement to create an Instagram account.
The App Clip functionality allows users to watch an initial selection of Reels, browse for more trending videos, and share content with friends. However, after viewing six Reels, the App Clip prompts users to download the full Instagram application.
As defined by Apple, App Clips are “a small part of your app that’s discoverable at the moment it’s needed and lets people complete a quick task from your app — even before installing your full app.” These short experiences can range from renting a bike to making payments at establishments. It’s essential to note that, while App Clips are smaller and designed for quick access, they still require an initial download to function.
Users can trigger App Clips through various methods including NFC tags, QR codes, and shared links. When activated, a drawer appears at the bottom of the screen displaying the app’s name along with an Open button. Tapping this opens the App Clip in fullscreen, allowing the user to complete the intended task. Additionally, App Clips have the capability to send notifications for up to eight hours after being accessed.
This feature is designed to offer users a trial experience of the app, providing an opportunity for those who may be hesitant to try it out before undertaking the more lengthy process of downloading and installing.
