Respawn Entertainment has begun work on the third installment of the Star Wars Jedi saga, confirmed publisher Electronic Arts on Tuesday. During the Investor Day 2024 conference, EA announced that the developer is actively creating the “final chapter” of Jedi knight Cal Kestis’ journey. This upcoming title will conclude a trilogy that started with 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and continued with last year’s release, Star Wars: Jedi Survivor.
Announcement of New Star Wars Jedi Title
At the conference, Laura Miele, EA’s president of Entertainment and Technology, discussed various ongoing projects within the company’s studios. She confirmed that development on the third entry in the Star Wars Jedi series is underway, stating, “Respawn’s working hard to bring the final chapter of this thrilling story to players.” However, Miele did not disclose any information regarding the release date of the game.
Miele elaborated on EA’s successful partnership with Lucasfilm and its extensive portfolio of Star Wars titles, pointing out that the publisher has generated “some of the highest quality and best-selling Star Wars games of all time,” amassing over $5 billion in net bookings.
“This impressive track record includes, of course, the Star Wars Jedi games, where over 40 million Star Wars fans have connected with Cal Kestis and his arc of becoming a powerful Jedi,” she noted.
EA secured an exclusive license to develop Star Wars games for consoles and PC back in 2013, covering a decade. Since then, the company has produced popular titles including the Star Wars Battlefront series, space combat action game Star Wars: Squadrons, along with the two games in the Star Wars Jedi franchise. However, EA no longer holds exclusive rights for creating Star Wars video games.
The Jedi Trilogy’s Narrative Arc
Before the launch of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, game director Stig Asmussen expressed that he envisioned Cal Kestis’ story as a trilogy. Asmussen, who directed the first two games, has since left Respawn to establish his own studio.
Although this is the first official confirmation from EA regarding the sequel to Jedi Survivor, actor Cameron Monaghan, the voice and motion capture talent for Cal Kestis, mentioned at a Comic Con event in September 2023 that the third game was in development. “We’re working on the third. We’re in the process of doing it right now,” Monaghan reportedly stated. “That’s a big undertaking and there have been some conversations so far, but hopefully when all things are said and done, we’ll be able to go in and make something really cool for you guys again.”
The Star Wars Jedi series chronicles the coming-of-age journey of Cal Kestis, a former Padawan who survives the purge and embarks on an expansive quest to reestablish the Jedi Order with the support of his friends. He ultimately grows into a formidable Jedi Knight. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the second installment, was released last year on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X, and it finally made its debut on PS4 and Xbox One on Tuesday.
