Samsung has partnered with GSMA to enhance connectivity on its Galaxy-branded smartphones. As part of this collaboration, devices running on Android 15 accompanied by the One UI 7 interface will now feature voice over LTE (VoLTE) activated by default in regions where it is supported. Previously, users had to manually turn on VoLTE connectivity on their devices. This change is anticipated to make the feature more accessible, potentially benefiting a larger user base. VoLTE technology is known to enhance voice call clarity and improve connectivity on 4G and 5G networks, though its availability may differ across network providers and geographic areas.
Samsung Galaxy Phones with One UI 7 to Now Support VoLTE
On Wednesday, GSMA and Samsung announced their collaboration, which allows Samsung Galaxy smartphones operating on Android 15 or newer to come with VoLTE enabled by default. This initiative is projected to significantly enhance voice call quality when users connect to 4G and 5G networks.
Many Galaxy-branded smartphones released in recent years, including the newly launched Galaxy S25 series, are compatible with VoLTE. However, activating the feature previously required user intervention. The new default setting comes at a critical time, as numerous telecom operators shift their focus away from 2G and 3G networks in favor of more advanced 4G and 5G technologies.
The GSMA has indicated that Samsung utilizes its Network Settings Exchange (NSX) and Interoperability Testing services, which facilitate the automatic enabling of VoLTE. According to both companies, the compatible devices utilize “operator-defined IMS settings via NSX or default to GSMA Profile #4 when necessary.”
The NSX serves as a centralized platform that standardizes the distribution of mobile network settings from various operators to device manufacturers globally, according to GSMA. This system permits mobile network operators (MNOs) and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) to upload, manage, and distribute their most current network settings.
By employing the GSMA NSX, network operators can convey IMS-specific settings to device manufacturers, ensuring enhanced service benefits and interoperability. Additionally, devices can be pre-configured according to the shared network settings from each operator.
GSMA’s Interoperability Testing service offers a suite of validation tools designed to ensure that devices are compatible with operator requirements for VoLTE before they are commercially deployed. Samsung has reportedly aligned its testing procedures with GSMA-standard VoLTE testing protocols, highlighting the significance of industry cooperation.
