WhatsApp is preparing to introduce compatibility with third-party messaging applications, providing users with increased control over their messaging preferences. A recent report has disclosed further information about this upcoming feature, indicating that users will have the option to enable or disable the functionality and select which external apps they wish to connect with. The rollout must occur before March 6, coinciding with the enforcement of the European Union’s (EU) new Digital Markets Act (DMA).

A report from WABetaInfo, which includes a screenshot from developer version 2.24.6.2, reveals that the new functionality, referred to as “third-party chats,” is designed for users in the EU. This initiative aligns with EU regulations requiring interoperability among messaging platforms, allowing users to communicate across different services without the need to download multiple applications. Once implemented, WhatsApp users will be able to send messages to contacts on platforms such as Telegram, Signal, and others.

The screenshot illustrates a new interface section labeled Third-party chats. It showcases a new icon that depicts a message symbol circled by three dots arranged in a triangular formation, with one circle highlighted in dark green, likely representing a third-party app. Users will also see an option to Turn off third-party chats, along with another option for Selected apps, which aims to grant users the ability to determine which applications they wish to connect with.

This level of customization aligns with the DMA’s requirements for user control over data sharing and communication settings. Through this feature, users will have the autonomy to choose whether to utilize it, for how long, and with which apps they would like to communicate. Currently, the official release date of the feature remains unannounced, and it is not anticipated to extend beyond European borders.

Previously, reports had highlighted an additional interface screen pertaining to this feature. It appeared to serve as an introductory guide, with WhatsApp presenting various warnings to users prior to activating third-party chats. Among these warnings were indications of the absence of end-to-end encryption for messages and increased risks related to spam and scams.
