WhatsApp is reportedly introducing a new end-to-end encryption (E2EE) label designed for both individual and group chats. This upcoming feature aims to enhance user awareness by displaying a message confirming that communications are encrypted and that WhatsApp does not store any of the conversation details. This development is particularly timely, following a recent post by Meta addressing the challenges associated with E2EE and delays experienced in implementing third-party chat functionalities in Europe, which have arisen due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The feature was identified by WABetaInfo in WhatsApp’s beta version for Android 2.24.6.11, which was made available to select beta testers on March 9 through the Google Play Beta Program. According to the report, the rollout is limited to a subset of beta users, indicating that the feature is still in its nascent phases and may undergo further refinements before a wider release.

According to the report, the label reads end-to-end encrypted and appears underneath the contact or group name, accompanied by a lock icon. This label is temporary, vanishing after a few seconds to reveal the last seen status in individual chats and the names of participants in group conversations. This feature adds a new element of encryption visibility within the application.

WhatsApp currently displays an E2EE label at the bottom of the home screen and shows the same information during voice and video calls, as well as in statuses and more. Users can also verify encryption manually by accessing the Encryption tab on the contact information page. The new label serves as a proactive reminder about the encryption status, conveniently positioned for users to see easily.

This initiative gains significance in light of recent statements from Meta regarding the risks linked to encryption in third-party chats across Europe. The company, which employs the Signal protocol-based Noise Protocol Framework for data encryption, emphasized its responsibility for ensuring encryption at the user’s end and during data transit. However, it clarified that it cannot guarantee the same once data reaches a third-party platform. Meta has suggested that messaging applications enter into agreements to utilize either the Signal protocol or another compatible encryption method.
