Meta Platforms revealed on Wednesday that its Ray-Ban Meta Glasses will soon be available for purchase in India, among other locations. Initially launched in September 2023 exclusively in the United States, the smart glasses are now being rolled out to additional regions, finally making their entry into the Indian market. The updated versions feature new styles and functionalities, including an expanded live translation service and the capacity to send and receive direct messages (DMs) and video calls through Instagram.
According to Meta, the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses will be available in India, Mexico, and the UAE. The base model is priced at $299 (approximately Rs. 25,000) in the United States. Developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the glasses come equipped with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, open-ear speakers, and microphones, enabling users to take photos, listen to music, and converse while on the move.
Details regarding the specific pricing and availability of the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses in India have yet to be disclosed by the company.
The new designs for the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses include options such as the Skyler Shiny Chalk Grey with Transitions Sapphire lenses, Skyler Shiny Black with G15 Green lenses, and Skyler Shiny Black with Clear lenses.
The live translation feature was initially introduced in December 2024 but was restricted to the US and Canada in early access. The rollout is now expanding to all markets where the smart glasses are sold. With a simple voice command, “Hey Meta, start live translation,” users can benefit from real-time speech translation between English and either Spanish, French, or Italian.
Users can listen to the translated audio through the open-ear speakers and obtain a transcription of the conversation. Additionally, language packs can be downloaded, enabling live translation without needing to connect the glasses to a Wi-Fi network.
Meta is also enhancing Instagram’s integration with a new function that allows users to send and receive DMs, photos, audio calls, and video calls directly from the glasses. For instance, a user can simply say, “Hey Meta, send a message to Lisa on Instagram,” to send a DM through Instagram.
Furthermore, the access to music applications is being expanded beyond the US and Canada. Ray-Ban Meta Glasses users in various regions will be able to play music through platforms like Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music, allowing them to ask questions about the tracks they are listening to.
Another significant enhancement pertains to the Live AI feature, which was launched in December of the previous year. This feature grants Meta AI access to the cameras of the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses to monitor the video feed in real-time. The company notes that its chatbot can continuously observe the user’s surroundings and respond to inquiries about them. Users can engage with Meta AI without the typical “Hey Meta” command and can pose follow-up questions. The update aims to enable Meta AI to participate in conversations with a more natural tone. Live AI is also set to be made available in more regions across the EU.
