Instagram is in the process of developing an AI-driven feature aimed at enabling influencers—users with substantial followings on the platform—to automate their interactions with followers. This new initiative, known as “Creator AI,” is currently undergoing testing. According to reports, the feature will provide AI chatbots specifically designed for influencers that can utilize their data to engage directly in direct messages (DMs), mimicking their communication style and mannerisms to create a more personalized interaction.
The New York Times reported that Meta, the parent company of Instagram, is introducing the Creator AI program to prominent influencers with large audiences. Sources familiar with the project indicated that it is still in the early stages of testing. Initially, the focus will be on integrating AI capabilities for influencers’ DMs, with potential future expansions into comment sections on their posts.
This new program will enable influencers to use AI chatbots within their DMs to handle messages from followers. This approach aims to address a common challenge faced by popular content creators: managing the high volume of messages that can overwhelm them. Ignoring these messages can hinder opportunities for fostering organic engagement, while attempting to respond to countless followers could consume valuable time.
To facilitate this, the AI chatbots will be trained using the influencer’s own data, including their posts, comments, captions, audio from Reels, and even previous message exchanges, allowing the AI to adopt the influencer’s unique texting style. Influencers will retain control over the specific data used for training the chatbot.
This move is not Meta’s first foray into AI-driven simulations of real individuals. Previously, the company launched AI avatars based on various celebrities like Kylie Jenner, YouTuber Mr. Beast, and rapper Snoop Dogg. These AI personalities functioned as independent chatbots that could engage users in conversation as if they were the celebrities themselves, maintaining their own Instagram and Facebook accounts.
The acceptance of this new feature is likely to be influenced by public opinion. For some users, it could present an enjoyable way to connect with their favorite influencers on a deeper level, while others may not favor the idea of interacting with a simulated version of a person.
