WhatsApp is reportedly developing a nearby file-sharing feature for Android users that utilizes Bluetooth technology for transferring files. This feature was initially highlighted in January 2024, but has yet to make an appearance in the app’s beta version. Recent reports suggest that enhancements are being made, and the feature may soon become accessible to beta users. Additionally, the company is also said to be working on a Favourites tab.
The feature was identified by WABetaInfo, a tracker of WhatsApp functionalities, within the WhatsApp beta build version 2.24.9.22. However, it remains inactive for beta testers at this time. According to the report, the People Nearby feature now includes a screen outlining the necessary permissions for it to function effectively, complete with an animation showing how users can find others nearby, along with a list of individuals who can be discovered.
According to the screenshots, the People Nearby feature, accessible from the Settings menu, now alerts users about the permissions WhatsApp needs to be enabled. These include access to photos, media, and files, along with Bluetooth and location access. The file access is necessary for sharing, while Bluetooth and location services are likely essential for maintaining a local network with adjacent users.
Once the necessary permissions are granted, users will navigate to a separate page where they can view other users who have enabled nearby file-sharing, allowing them to exchange files without an internet connection. The screenshot indicates that the file-sharing process is end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that users’ phone numbers remain concealed.
This feature may serve as a practical solution for sharing large files that typically consume significant data when sent over the internet or through cloud services, especially in scenarios where network connectivity is poor or data is limited. The report concludes that the feature is nearing completion and may soon be available to beta testers in a forthcoming update.
