Meta’s microblogging platform, Threads, is exploring the addition of a feature that allows users to cross-post content from Instagram. Reports indicate that a select group of accounts has been updated with the capability to upload images to both Instagram and Threads simultaneously. This follows prior tests of similar cross-posting functionality for the Facebook app.
According to a recent TechCrunch report, some users of Instagram can now access a toggle that enables cross-posting to Threads. Users must opt in to utilize this feature, and it remains unclear whether the toggle will be available for future posts. Since this functionality is currently in testing, not all accounts will have access to it, as evidenced by staff members at Gadgets 360 who have not yet received the update.
At this time, the cross-posting feature supports only image sharing from Instagram to Threads. Users cannot share Reels through this function, meaning that vertical videos will still need to be uploaded manually to Threads, even if cross-posting is activated on their Instagram accounts.
The report further explains that when an image is cross-posted from Instagram, the caption will be carried over to Threads automatically. However, users should note that Threads does not support hashtags in the same manner as Instagram, which means that any hashtags present in the cross-posted text will be removed.
Currently, Instagram users already have the ability to cross-post content and Stories to Facebook by enabling a toggle in their settings. When the simultaneous sharing option to Threads becomes available, it is expected to mirror the same functionality as Facebook’s cross-posting tool, remaining an opt-in feature.
