Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has announced its intention to appeal the unfavorable aspects of a recent ruling in the monopolistic case brought by the U.S. Department of Justice.
In a decision issued on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema determined that Google “willfully acquired and maintained monopoly power” in the sectors related to publisher ad servers and ad exchanges.
Publisher ad servers are essential platforms that enable websites to manage and store their digital advertising inventory. Together with ad exchanges, they facilitate revenue generation for news publishers and other online content providers through advertising sales.
Judge Brinkema also concluded that Google holds an illegal monopoly in two segments of the online advertising technology market.
In response to the ruling, Google stated on Friday that the decision was mixed. The judge dismissed allegations that Google’s advertiser tools or its acquisitions of DoubleClick and AdMeld were anticompetitive, yet found that Google’s publisher tools violated antitrust laws due to their exclusionary practices against competitors.
The Department of Justice has contended that Google should divest itself of at least its Google Ad Manager, which encompasses both the publisher ad server and the associated ad exchange.
