xAI has announced the launch of a new memory feature for its Grok artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, which is being rolled out to users starting Thursday. This capability, akin to similar features offered by ChatGPT and Gemini, enables Grok to retain select information from individual users, enhancing the personalization of future interactions. With the incorporation of memory, Grok will be able to provide customized advice and recommendations, leading to more engaging conversations. This feature will be accessible to all Grok users via web and mobile applications.

Grok Can Now Remember Past Conversations

In an announcement shared via a post on X (formerly Twitter), Grok’s official account detailed the deployment of the new memory functionality. This addition allows the chatbot to recall specific details from prior conversations and utilize them in future exchanges. It will be available to both free and paid Grok users across the platform’s web interface, as well as on the Android and iOS apps.

When users pose questions that benefit from contextual information, Grok is now able to reference previous interactions to provide more relevant responses. For example, if a user requests a workout plan, the chatbot will consider their preferred exercise types when formulating suggestions.

Users will maintain control over the data that Grok remembers or refers to. Whenever a response incorporates past interactions, a new icon labeled “Referenced Chats” will appear beneath the output, alongside the share icon. Tapping this icon opens a sidebar displaying the specific memories that informed the response. Users also have the option to delete these memories directly from the sidebar, although this feature is currently limited to the web interface. xAI plans to extend this functionality to the Android app soon.

Alternatively, users can navigate to the Settings menu and visit the Data Controls page to completely disable the memory feature or selectively delete individual memories. For now, these options are only available through the website. It is also important to note that while the memory feature is being launched globally, it will not be accessible to users in the European Union (EU) or the UK, due to local privacy regulations.

xAI, led by Elon Musk, has entered the generative AI arena relatively late, introducing its Grok chatbot in November 2023—almost a year behind competitors such as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Anthropic. However, since its introduction, the company has consistently rolled out new features to enhance Grok’s capabilities and align it more closely with its rivals. In 2024, xAI has introduced Android and iOS applications, launched the Grok 3 model featuring DeepSearch and Voice Mode, and integrated Grok into X (formerly Twitter), where users can tag it in replies to receive direct responses.
