Warner Bros. has announced that the sequel to the popular video game Hogwarts Legacy will incorporate narrative connections to the upcoming Harry Potter television series being developed by HBO. David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, confirmed in a Tuesday interview that the studio is collaborating closely with the creators of the Max Original series, which is based on the beloved Wizarding World intellectual property. He emphasized that the development of the Hogwarts Legacy sequel remains a “very big priority” for the company.
Hogwarts Legacy’s Sequel to Connect with Harry Potter Series
During his discussion with Variety, Haddad highlighted the immense success of Hogwarts Legacy as a driving force behind Warner Bros.’ commitment to further exploring the Harry Potter franchise through new media, including the HBO series, video games, and merchandise. He confirmed that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel, which is currently under development, will feature connections to the narrative developments in the forthcoming HBO Max series. According to the report, Avalanche Software, the studio behind Hogwarts Legacy, has been collaborating on key storytelling components for the sequel that align with the HBO series.
Haddad reaffirmed that the sequel is a top priority for Warner Bros., stating that the first installment clearly demonstrated the franchise’s potential. He remarked, “We have known for some time that fans are looking for more things in this world, and so we’re spending a lot of time thinking about that.” Additionally, he noted the company’s eagerness to explore the opportunities that were unlocked by the success of Hogwarts Legacy last year.
In a statement made in September, Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels emphasized that developing a direct sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is among the studio’s key objectives for the coming years. At the Bank of America’s 2024 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference, he indicated that a successor to the game is “one of the biggest priorities in a couple of years down the road.”
The open-world action-adventure game Hogwarts Legacy has been a remarkable success for Warner Bros. Games, reportedly selling over 30 million copies as of October 2024. The game was the best-selling title of 2023, with 22 million copies sold by the end of that year.
The new HBO Potter series, announced last year, will be based on the original seven Harry Potter books and is expected to launch a new chapter in the franchise’s history. It is planned to run for ten consecutive years, premiering on HBO in 2026.
While specific release dates for the Hogwarts Legacy sequel are still pending, Warner Bros. Games continues to expand its Harry Potter offerings. The studio recently released Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions in September, allowing fans to engage with the magical sport on platforms including PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
