Apple appears to be moving closer to launching its first foldable iPhone, described as a larger book-style device. After months of speculation surrounding its design direction, recent analyst insights and leaks indicate that Apple is favoring a book-style form factor. A recent leak confirmed that the tech giant is set to utilize a nearly crease-free display, with Samsung confirmed as the sole supplier for this component.
Insights shared by a Naver blogger known as ‘yeux1122’, who drew on information from the Chinese social media platform Weibo, reveal that the foldable iPhone will introduce a hole-punch camera for its inaugural model. This marks a shift away from Apple’s typical Face ID biometric authentication, which has been standard across all iPhone models since the introduction of the iPhone 16e. Interestingly, it seems that Apple will continue to employ Touch ID for this device, leveraging the fingerprint authentication technology currently utilized in its budget iPad models.
Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously echoed these findings, noting that the device will adopt a book-style design, likely retailing between $2,000 and $2,500, and is projected to enter production in the fourth quarter of 2026. Kuo’s insights also included specifications for a 7.8-inch crease-free display and a 5.5-inch cover display. When folded, the device is expected to measure between 9 and 9.5 millimeters in thickness, shrinking to between 4.5 and 4.8 millimeters when unfolded.
Further information from this source confirmed the display sizes, indicating that the cover display will feature a resolution of 2,088 x 1,422 pixels, while the primary inner display will have a resolution of 2,713 x 1,920 pixels. Such specifications are comparable to those offered by other foldable devices, including Vivo’s X Fold 3 Pro and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6.
With the current implementation of Touch ID in Magic Keyboard power buttons on MacBooks and on iPads, it is anticipated that a similar approach will be adopted for the forthcoming foldable iPhone. Additionally, technology from another forthcoming device known as the iPhone 17 Air, touted to be the slimmest iPhone yet at just 5.5 millimeters thick, is said to influence the development of the foldable. Reports also suggest that the foldable’s display will adopt a 4:3 aspect ratio, aligning with the majority of Android-based foldable offerings available on the market today.
