Google Messages is reportedly developing a new capability that will enable users to initiate video calls through WhatsApp. This feature is still inactive but has been uncovered within the app’s code. It is designed to become operational when the user does not have Google Meet installed on their device, potentially simplifying the video calling experience for users of Google’s messaging platform. In a related update, the app has reportedly combined the camera viewfinder and gallery picker when the camera option is accessed.

Google Messages May Soon Support WhatsApp Video Calling

An investigation by Android Authority has revealed that Google Messages may soon incorporate WhatsApp’s video calling feature. The discovery was made in Google Messages version 20250131, where a flag indicating the feature was found in the code. Currently, this functionality is not available for user testing.

According to screenshots shared by the publication, a prompt recommending users to make video calls through WhatsApp appears when tapping the video call icon in Google Messages. However, this option is visible only if the user does not have Google Meet installed. Presently, users are limited to making video calls through Meet, and if it is not installed, the app instructs users to download it first.

With the anticipated WhatsApp feature, users can expect the app to bypass switching to WhatsApp for video calls, opening the video call interface directly in full-screen mode. This change could streamline the process for those who primarily use Google Messages.

Nevertheless, the feature is expected to function only in individual chats. In group conversations, users will still need to utilize Google Meet for video calls. Furthermore, if the recipient does not have WhatsApp installed, the WhatsApp video call prompt will not appear within Google Messages.

It is important to note that Google has not made any official announcement regarding this feature, and the actual functionality may vary when or if it is released to the public.
