YouTube is reportedly planning to launch an experimental feature that would allow users to add “notes” beneath videos. This initiative appears to be inspired by the Community Notes feature found on X (previously known as Twitter). The primary goal is to enrich the content available on the platform by providing essential context, such as clarifying whether a video is a parody or whether older footage has been misconstrued as a current event, thereby fighting misinformation.

Introducing Notes on YouTube

In a recent blog post, YouTube outlined its intention to make videos easier to understand through the addition of notes. The platform stated, “This could range from clarifying that a song is intended as a parody, to indicating when a new version of a product being discussed is available, or informing viewers when old footage is incorrectly presented as a recent event.”

The feature is being launched as a pilot project in English specifically for users in the United States. Participants selected for the trial will receive an email invitation or a notification through the Creator Studio to engage with the feature prior to its wider release.

Similar to X’s Community Notes, YouTube’s new feature will present an Add note option below videos. Users can enter their contextual information in a text box and submit it by clicking Send. The notes will be published anonymously, without disclosing the contributor’s identity.

Mechanics of the Feature

Once a note has been submitted, it will undergo evaluation by third-party reviewers, according to YouTube. This process is intended to enhance the learning algorithms of the platform. Reviewers will have three evaluation choices: helpful, somewhat helpful, or unhelpful. An algorithm will then determine which notes to display based on these ratings. If a note is deemed helpful by multiple reviewers, it will be posted beneath the corresponding video. After the initial pilot phase, contributors will also have the ability to rate notes, according to YouTube.

To maximize the helpfulness of their notes, users are encouraged to provide citations, rely on credible sources, and address any claims made in the video directly. Using language that is neutral and easily understandable may also contribute to the efficacy of the notes.
