The Game Awards unveiled its nominations for the best video games of 2024 across various categories on Monday. Leading the nominations are the PS5 exclusive Astro Bot and Square Enix’s highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, each receiving seven nominations, including the prestigious Game of the Year award. Competing for this top honor are action-RPG Black Myth: Wukong, the indie roguelike deckbuilder Balatro, the breakout RPG Metaphor: ReFantazio, and the Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree, which marks the first time a DLC has been nominated for Game of the Year.
In addition to its Game of the Year nod, Metaphor: ReFantazio has earned nominations in several other categories, including Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, and Best RPG, totaling six nominations. The indie title Balatro, celebrated for its innovative take on the roguelike genre, follows closely with five nominations, while both Black Myth: Wukong and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree have garnered four nominations each.
The nomination of Shadow of the Erdtree for Game of the Year has led to some disappointment among fans, as it is not a standalone game. The Game Awards now permit DLCs, remakes, and remasters to be nominated in all categories, provided the jury considers the creative and technical work deserving of recognition. Consequently, the inclusion of the Elden Ring expansion in this category has meant that Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth did not receive a Game of the Year nomination.
On the indie front, nominees for Best Independent Game include Animal Well, Balatro, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Neva, and UFO 50. Balatro’s success is reflected in its multiple nominations, which also include Best Game Direction, Best Debut Indie Game, and Best Mobile Game. Neva, a puzzle-platformer published by Devolver Digital, has been nominated for Best Art Direction and Games for Impact, securing a total of three nominations.
This year’s Game Awards marks the first time since 2019 that no title published by Nintendo is vying for the Game of the Year accolade. However, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has received nominations for Best Action/Adventure Game and Best Family Game.
The Game Awards 2024 is set to take place live at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on December 12, 2024, and will be available for streaming on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch. Creator and producer Geoff Keighley will host the ceremony. Below is the complete list of nominees:
