Anthropic is in the process of developing a voice chat function for its proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Claude. Sources indicate that the company plans to introduce this feature, referred to as “voice mode,” potentially within the current month. While competitors such as OpenAI and Google have successfully integrated dedicated voice functionality into their chatbots—ChatGPT and Gemini, respectively—Anthropic has primarily concentrated on enhancing the text interface. This news follows closely on the heels of Anthropic’s recent rollout of an educational subscription plan, akin to OpenAI’s Edu offering.
Claude to Reportedly Get a Voice Mode
A report from Bloomberg suggests that the San Francisco-based AI firm is readying the launch of its voice mode feature. Based on information from an unnamed insider, the article asserts that this feature could be available to a select group of users as early as April. However, it should be noted that these plans may be subject to change.
According to the report, the planned feature will include three distinct voice options named Airy, Mellow, and Buttery, the latter being characterized by a British accent. This information was initially uncovered by app researcher “M1Astra,” who identified references to these voices within the code of Claude’s iOS application.
While specific details about the voice mode are still sparse, it remains uncertain whether it will function as a straightforward text-to-speech option or feature a more human-like quality, akin to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. It is also unknown if the voice mode will be accessible to all users or limited to paid subscribers. The selected voices are expected to offer variations in pitch, timbre, and intonation.
Anthropic is entering the voice chatbot sphere later than its peers. Over the past year, numerous AI-centric companies, including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and even Apple, have either announced or launched voice communication features. Meta is also reportedly developing a two-way voice chat capability for its Meta AI.
Nevertheless, Anthropic has remained active in the AI landscape. In 2025, the company introduced several new capabilities, including a web search function for Claude and the launch of the Claude 3.7 Sonnet AI model, which features enhanced reasoning abilities. Additionally, just last month, Anthropic researchers published a paper that marked significant advancements in AI model cognitive processes.
