WhatsApp is reportedly working on a feature for its web version that would allow users to choose unique usernames. This development is anticipated to enhance the user experience on the messaging platform by permitting connections without the need to divulge phone numbers. Currently, this feature is said to be in the developmental phase and may not be available to all users of WhatsApp’s web client.

Usernames on WhatsApp

According to WABetaInfo, a platform that tracks WhatsApp updates, users could soon personalize their profiles with usernames. Initially rumored last year, the feature has recently been linked to a revamped user interface. The implementation of usernames is expected to promote privacy and comfort by allowing users to connect through these identifiers rather than sharing their mobile numbers.

An alleged screenshot of the feature suggests that it will state, “Your friends and family can contact you on WhatsApp using this username.” This description indicates that the username will replace the phone number in communications, enhancing user privacy.

With this potential feature, it is believed that only those users with a specific username will be able to reach out to each other. Each username is expected to be unique to prevent duplication, and users may need to verify availability while choosing their usernames. Due to its current development status, members of the Gadgets 360 team have been unable to confirm its functionality on the WhatsApp web client.

Other WhatsApp Features

In addition to introducing usernames, WhatsApp is also said to be working on a live transcription feature for voice messages. This functionality could allow users to receive text transcriptions of both sent and received voice messages. Reports indicate that a new banner may appear under voice messages, prompting users to request a transcription.

This feature is presently found in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android, specifically version 2.24.15.5. Following this, another feature is reportedly in development that may enable live transcriptions during calls. Initially thought to utilize Google’s technology, recent information suggests that WhatsApp might employ its in-house voice translation capabilities for this function.
