Shipments of smartphones labeled ‘Made in India’ experienced a year-on-year (YoY) increase of 6 percent in 2024, as reported by a market research firm. Leading the market, Samsung and Vivo captured the highest market shares. Collectively, Samsung and Apple were responsible for an impressive 94 percent of the total smartphone exports from the nation, benefiting from the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Meanwhile, Dixon has emerged as the foremost manufacturer of smartphones and feature phones in India, demonstrating a remarkable 39 percent YoY growth.
Growth of ‘Made in India’ Smartphone Shipments
According to Counterpoint Research’s ‘Make in India’ Service, Samsung maintained its position as the leading smartphone manufacturer for 2024, achieving a 6 percent YoY growth along with a 13 percent rise in exports. The company secured a 20 percent share of the Indian smartphone market.
Vivo followed in second place with a 14 percent market share, propelled by its strategies for offline expansion and enhancements in its distribution network. On the other hand, Oppo faced challenges, experiencing a 34 percent drop in shipments, which led to a fall to the fourth position in the market. The analysis indicates that Dixon’s impressive 39 percent YoY growth was the result of new partnerships with Transsion brands and Realme, making it the top manufacturer of both smartphones and feature phones in the country.
Tata Electronics also marked its presence as the fastest-growing manufacturer in 2024, showcasing a staggering 107 percent YoY increase. Contributions from the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 significantly influenced this growth. To strengthen its role in the global electronics supply chain, the company has begun semiconductor fabrication with a new factory in Haryana, as well as setting up an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) plant in Assam.
Moreover, DBG Technology, which produces smartphones for brands like Xiaomi and Realme in India, also reported double-digit growth. Prachir Singh, a Senior Research Analyst at Counterpoint, noted that the smartphone manufacturing sector in India is projected to continue its double-digit growth into 2025, with an anticipated rise in “local value addition.”
