WhatsApp is working to enhance user privacy by implementing a feature designed to block messages from unknown senders, as revealed by a feature tracker. This development aims to improve device performance while safeguarding user accounts from unsolicited messages. Additionally, WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to “like” status updates, enabling quick reactions to the media and text shared by others.

New Feature to Block Messages From Unfamiliar Accounts in Development

WABetaInfo, a prominent feature tracker, has identified an upcoming Block unknown account messages toggle in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android 2.24.17.24, which is currently being tested among select users. Since this feature remains in development, it is not yet accessible for user testing, although it appears to have been uncovered through reverse engineering techniques.

A screenshot of the new feature, located under the Privacy > Advanced menu in the settings, has been shared by WABetaInfo. The feature aims to block messages from unknown accounts if they exceed a specific limit, as indicated by the leaked descriptions.

This feature is designed to enhance user security and maintain app performance on smartphones. It is anticipated that even with the Block unknown account messages setting activated, some messages may still be allowed to pass through.

In comparison, Signal takes a more restrictive approach by default, mandating users to Accept, Block, or Report any message from an unidentified sender. Under this system, senders do not receive read receipts until the message is accepted by the recipient, and defensive options prevent further contact from the sender.

WhatsApp Introduces “Like” Reactions for Status Updates

Meanwhile, beta testers on WhatsApp can now express their appreciation for status updates using a heart emoji. This feature mirrors the functionality seen on Instagram stories, where users can upload text, images, and videos for a 24-hour period.

Users who update to WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.17.21 through the Google Play beta program will notice a new heart icon at the bottom right of the screen, positioned beside the reply bar. However, this feature may be gradually rolled out, as initial tests by Gadgets 360 staff revealed that it was not accessible even with the latest beta update.

As detailed by WABetaInfo, users will be able to view who has reacted to their stories through a list that displays contacts who have viewed the status. This feature is expected to function similarly to Instagram, allowing users to see who has liked their updates. Plans are in place for this capability to be introduced to users on both iOS and Android in future app versions.
