A new ‘AI mode’ for Google Search is reportedly in the works, as evidenced by a recently discovered icon during the app’s development. A publication has identified an icon that may signify this new artificial intelligence feature, drawing similarities to the existing Gemini Live function. This icon has appeared in the latest beta release of the Google app, hinting at a fresh, AI-driven interface for search queries. The AI mode was initially observed back in December 2024 and promises a full-screen layout that facilitates the entry of intricate queries that conventional search engines struggle to address.
Google Search’s AI Mode Could Reportedly Get a New Icon
According to Android Authority, Google may be planning to rearrange several icons on its app’s home interface in anticipation of the new AI mode. The publication discovered these new icons during an APK teardown of the Google app beta version 16.6.23 for Android devices.
Since the new icons and shortcuts are still under development, beta testers will not have access to them even after updating to the newest version. However, leaked screenshots provide a preview of the interface that could eventually replace the current four icons associated with Google Lens’ camera functionality.
At present, Google displays shortcuts for translation, homework assistance, and music searches. These icons may soon be substituted with three new options, including the microphone and Google Lens icons. Notably, the first new icon features a waveform design.
The publication’s report indicates that this waveform icon, which has two extra lines compared to the Gemini Live icon, is associated with an emerging feature known as Search Live, a name uncovered in the Google app’s code. Speculation suggests that Search Live may enable two-way voice interactions within the AI mode or could simply serve as an internal designation for the new feature.
Given the duplication of icons and potential for inconsistent naming, it is plausible that the design and functionality will see more updates before their official release.
Earlier this month, a report indicated that Google is in the process of testing the AI mode internally. Employees have reportedly received invitations via email to engage with and evaluate the feature. The timeline for public rollout remains uncertain.
