The microblogging platform X, previously known as Twitter, experienced a significant outage early Wednesday, affecting users in India and around the globe. The service, owned by Elon Musk, rendered many users unable to access its features on both mobile and desktop versions. A significant spike in reports was noted on monitoring site Downdetector, with over 20,000 complaints logged regarding the accessibility of the platform.

Update: X has resumed normal operations, with users able to view posts on their feeds around 9:15 am IST, nearly half an hour after the initial reports of inaccessibility.

According to data from Downdetector, more than 27,700 outage reports were submitted around 8:46 am IST, indicating a sharp increase in concerns at that time. Users attempting to access the app encountered an error message stating “posts aren’t loading right now,” prompting X to advise them to “try again.”

Reuters also reported that outages were recorded in Canada, with 3,300 reports, and 1,600 in the United Kingdom. The cause of the downtime has yet to be determined, and the platform has not issued an official statement regarding the outage.

Meanwhile, X users flocked to Threads, a competing platform, to share their experiences and inquire about the service issues. One user remarked, “Finally a good place to look for an answer to the question ‘is Twitter down?’” while others joined in with typical posts about the situation.

According to Downdetector’s data, 68 percent of users reported issues with the app, while 26 percent experienced difficulties on the website. Additionally, 6 percent faced server-related challenges.

Staff members at Gadgets 360 also reported difficulties in accessing the X app, further confirming the outage in India.

This incident is not unprecedented for the platform. A similar outage occurred on August 9, leading to over 7,000 complaints registered on Downdetector, predominantly from the United States. Users then reported encountering an error that dated all posts to “Dec 31, 1969.”
