Snapchat has announced a partnership with Google Cloud to incorporate the capabilities of its AI model, Gemini, into the My AI feature. This collaboration, revealed on Tuesday, enhances the social media platform with advanced computer vision and improved processing for text, audio, and code. According to Google Cloud, Snapchat’s My AI is leveraging the Gemini AI models available on Vertex AI. Notably, Snapchat has a long-standing relationship with Google Cloud, having launched on the platform in 2011.
Snapchat’s My AI Is Powered by Gemini
In a press release, Google Cloud provided insights into the partnership. While the integration of Gemini into My AI was initiated earlier this year, the announcement comes at a time when user engagement is at a high. Google emphasized that Snapchat’s AI chatbot stands out as one of the most prominent consumer chatbots currently available.
This integration not only equips My AI with generative AI functionalities but also significantly enhances its capabilities in handling text, audio, image, video, and code. Users can now upload audio files or images and pose questions about them. In a recent video, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel demonstrated how users can send an image of various snacks to the chatbot, which can then identify the healthiest option.
In practical use, this feature allows users to request translations of street signs while traveling abroad or obtain information from video clips. Such advancements aim to make interactions with the chatbot more engaging and informative.
All Snapchat users currently have access to My AI, although Plus subscribers enjoy additional features such as image generation and AI-driven edits. Google reports that since the implementation of Gemini, user engagement on the platform has increased by 2.5 times in the United States. Prior to adopting Gemini, Snapchat’s AI chatbot operated on OpenAI’s GPT models.
During the Gemini at Work digital event, Google Cloud also showcased a range of new clients that have integrated its AI models to enhance their services. Among these clients are Volkswagen US, Warner Bros. Discovery, Bell Canada, Best Buy, and Telecom Italia, showcasing the broad appeal of Gemini’s capabilities in various sectors.
