Google Sheets is set to receive a significant upgrade for its Gemini tool, enhancing its ability to analyze and visualize user data. This new functionality was announced on Wednesday and is currently being made available to subscribers of Google Workspace and those who are part of the Google One AI Premium plan. A notable addition in this update is the capability for Gemini to transform complex prompts into Python code for multi-step analysis, an improvement from its previous limitation of converting requests into simple formulas for single-layer analysis.

New Features for Gemini in Google Sheets

In a blog post, the technology company based in Mountain View announced the forthcoming enhancements to the Gemini assistant within Google Sheets. The updated features will be accessible to a range of users, including Google Workspace Business Standard and Plus subscribers, as well as Enterprise Standard and Plus subscribers, and those utilizing the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons. Furthermore, Google One AI Premium subscribers will benefit from this latest set of features.

Previously, the Gemini side panel allowed users to summarize spreadsheets and create tables, primarily by converting prompts into formulas executed directly on the sheet. However, with the limited functionality of these formulas, users could only conduct a single-layer analysis of their spreadsheet data.

With the upcoming upgrade, Gemini will introduce advanced data analysis and visualization features. The AI assistant will now be able to convert user requests into executable Python code, allowing for a more comprehensive analysis of results across multiple layers.

According to Google, Gemini will enhance its ability to respond to queries regarding the data and provide in-depth insights into spreadsheets. Users can engage with the AI tool to uncover trends, patterns, and correlations within the data. Additionally, Gemini will possess the ability to generate charts, aiding users in easily visualizing their information. These charts can also be embedded as static images within the spreadsheet cells.

For instance, as highlighted in the blog post, a user interested in evaluating marketing campaign performance could request that Gemini “Provide insights on the top three performing channels by conversion rate,” and the AI would deliver a thorough breakdown complemented by relevant charts.

The rollout of these features is underway, with completion expected for all eligible users within approximately 15 days.
