YouTube is reportedly experiencing issues with the visibility of the “skip button” in its advertising interface. Some users have noted that the button is completely absent, while others reported it only becomes visible after the ad’s countdown timer runs out. The streaming platform has acknowledged these concerns but insists that the skip button is not being intentionally altered. YouTube is, however, exploring strategies to streamline its ad interface to enhance user experience. In addition, the company recently revealed an increase in the maximum duration of Shorts from one minute to three minutes.

YouTube Confirms Modifications on Ad Interface

Over the years, YouTube’s ad interface has undergone multiple changes, with the current setup featuring both skippable and unskippable ads. Unskippable ads display a brief bottom bar indicating the ad’s elapsed time and remaining duration, while skippable ads offer additional features.

For skippable ads, a countdown timer ranging from 15 to 30 seconds is displayed, which indicates the minimum time a viewer must watch before being allowed to skip. Once the timer expires, the skip button appears, enabling users to swiftly return to their desired content. In some cases, however, certain skippable ads may not display a countdown timer at all, allowing viewers to skip immediately.

In a recent Reddit post, a user shared a screenshot displaying a black square overlay that obscured both the timer and the skip button. Meanwhile, a report by Android Police highlighted a scenario where the skip button only became visible a few seconds into the ad, without initially showing a timer.

These occurrences have not been limited to one individual, as various users on X have also reported missing the skip button entirely. Staff members at Gadgets 360 have yet to experience this issue, which may suggest that the ongoing YouTube tests are geographically restricted.

YouTube spokesperson Oluwa Falodun informed Technology News, “YouTube is not hiding the skip button. On skippable ads, the button appears after 5 seconds into playback, as always.” Falodun also mentioned that YouTube is reducing elements on the ad interface to help viewers focus better on the ad content. One of the new features includes transforming the countdown timer into a progress bar displayed along the bottom of the screen.

It remains uncertain whether the issues users are experiencing with the skip button are the result of a glitch related to these adjustments. Further clarification from YouTube is awaited regarding this matter and the changes being implemented.
