Elon Musk has announced plans for his AI startup, xAI, to establish its own artificial intelligence game studio. In a recent post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the billionaire entrepreneur expressed his dissatisfaction with the concentration of game studios under large corporate entities. This is not Musk’s first foray into gaming; he recently shared a live stream playing Diablo 4 and has praised video games in various forums. In his update, Musk noted that the new AI game studio will operate under xAI.

Musk’s comments were made in response to a post by software engineer Billy Markus, who co-created Dogecoin. Markus criticized the gaming sector for being “ideologically captured” and remarked that players have consistently rejected “dumb” manipulations from developers and gaming journalists. He also pointed out that most of the enjoyable games he has played in recent years have come from independent developers.

In his reply, Musk emphasized, “Too many game studios that are owned by massive corporations,” and declared that xAI intends to create an AI game studio with the goal to “make games great again.”

The interest in AI’s potential within the gaming industry is growing among various companies. For example, Google DeepMind recently introduced Genie, an AI model designed to generate endless 2D platformer video games through predictive analysis. Additionally, they unveiled the Scalable Instructable Multiworld Agent (SIMA), an AI system capable of operating in diverse gaming environments and executing various tasks in 3D games.

Musk’s remarks regarding the dominance of large corporations in game development come shortly after a report indicated that Sony is planning to acquire Kadokawa, the Japanese tech company behind the developer of Elden Ring, FromSoftware. Last year saw Microsoft finalize its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, known for titles like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Diablo.

Moreover, Musk’s reference to xAI aligns with recent reports suggesting that he has significant ambitions for the AI firm, looking to expand its operational scope and revenue-generating potential. It is anticipated that the company will launch a standalone AI application, akin to ChatGPT, potentially within the next month.
