Adobe has announced that it is developing AI agents designed for Photoshop and Premiere Pro. These intelligent assistants will offer suggestions for editing photos and videos, even executing those changes automatically, as outlined in a blog post by Ely Greenfield, Adobe’s Chief Technology Officer for digital media.
The AI feature, branded as a “creative agent” within Photoshop, will introduce a new floating Actions panel that makes context-sensitive editing recommendations based on an analysis of the user’s image. For example, the AI may suggest options like removing background figures or adding blur to enhance depth of field. Users can simply click a suggestion to have the change implemented instantly.
Long-established Photoshop users often spend considerable time masking objects and manipulating layers for targeted modifications. Adobe has already integrated AI capabilities that allow users to extend images on a larger canvas or automatically remove background distractions with tools like Distraction Removal.
Adobe’s goal is to enable users to interact with agents using natural language, simplifying the learning process for various tasks, while still allowing the AI to handle the execution autonomously. Users will have the choice to engage with the agent for ongoing adjustments or to refine changes manually within layers. In a demonstration video, a user instructs the agent to enhance an image while also adding a text box, prompting the agent to outline steps such as removing background figures, auto-brightening, eliminating distractions, and managing layers.
In Premiere Pro, Adobe plans to enhance its recently unveiled Media Intelligence feature, which evaluates video content for objects and composition to aid users in locating necessary footage. Future iterations will include an AI agent capable of assisting with initial video edits.
Greenfield noted in his blog that while AI cannot substitute for human creativity, it can make informed suggestions based on user input, helping initiate projects. The AI will also serve as a learning tool, enabling users to grasp complex editing processes through concise commands. Eventually, Premiere Pro’s creative agent will assist with selecting shots, color correction, audio mixing, and more. Additionally, Adobe has rolled out a new feature called Generative Extend, which leverages AI to create transitions by extending video clips.
The initial AI agent for Photoshop is set to be showcased at Adobe’s upcoming Max event in London on April 24th.
