A decision from the European Union regarding potential violations of significant technology regulations by Apple and Meta is expected to be announced in the upcoming weeks, according to antitrust chief Teresa Ribera. She made these remarks during a session with lawmakers in the European Parliament on Tuesday.

The European Commission has been scrutinizing both Apple and Meta Platforms since March of the previous year for possible infringements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This legislation outlines specific guidelines for large tech companies, aiming to enhance competition and provide consumers with greater options.

Insider sources indicated to Reuters last month that both firms may face relatively minor fines for any violations of the DMA.

Initially, Ribera had projected that a ruling on the cases involving Apple and Meta would be released in March. However, she has now indicated that the timeline will extend slightly.

“Decisions could be adopted in the coming weeks,” Ribera stated when queried about the expected timeline during her address to lawmakers.

The escalating trade tensions between the United States and the EU, influenced by former President Donald Trump’s tariffs, have prompted the EU to take its first steps in response, with additional measures anticipated. Some member states, such as France, are advocating for a focused approach on U.S. services.
