Microsoft is gearing up to launch a collection of video games powered by its newly introduced artificial intelligence (AI) model, according to CEO Satya Nadella. Last week, the company unveiled Muse, a cutting-edge AI model designed to create 3D gaming environments and assist in game development through the generation of visual elements and controller actions. Over the past year, Microsoft has increasingly integrated AI technologies into its gaming division, including the release of an AI-driven chatbot for the Xbox platform in November 2024.
Nadella Discusses Muse in Podcast
In a recent podcast, Nadella elaborated on the Muse AI model and hinted at an upcoming catalogue of games that will be produced using this innovative technology. He expressed enthusiasm for the potential of these AI-generated games, stating, “The cool thing is what I’m excited about is bringing… we’re going to have a catalogue of games soon that we will start using these models, or we’re going to train these models to generate, and then start playing them,” during an episode of the Dwarkesh Podcast.
Nadella recalled an experience with Phil Spencer, where he observed the AI model effectively responding to inputs via an Xbox controller, producing coherent outputs consistent with the game dynamics.
The announcement of the Muse model marks a significant milestone for the company, akin to the impact of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Sora, according to Nadella. “This is kind of one such moment,” he remarked.
With Muse, the company aims to generate gameplay data that ensures consistent performance while also supporting user modifications. The World and Human Action Model (WHAM), known as Muse, was unveiled last week and has been developed collaboratively by Microsoft’s Research Game Intelligence and Teachable AI Experiences (Tai X) teams, alongside Xbox Games Studios’ Ninja Theory, the studio behind Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2.
Microsoft asserts that the generative AI model will assist game developers throughout the ideation process, especially in creating visuals and defining controller actions. Muse was trained on extensive gameplay data sourced from Ninja Theory’s 2020 MOBA title, Bleeding Edge.
