Brazil’s government has given Meta a deadline of Monday to clarify the alterations made to its fact-checking program, according to Solicitor General Jorge Messias on Friday.

This announcement follows Meta’s decision to discontinue its US fact-checking initiative and to lessen restrictions on discussions pertaining to sensitive subjects such as immigration and gender identity.

The specific actions that will be taken once the deadline passes remain uncertain.

Messias expressed the Brazilian government’s deep concern regarding Meta’s policy changes, describing the situation as resembling “an airport windsock” that shifts direction constantly based on external pressures. He emphasized that “Brazilian society will not be at the mercy of this kind of policy.”

On Thursday, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva characterized these changes as “extremely serious” and indicated that a meeting would be convened to address the matter.

Meta has not provided an immediate response to inquiries for comment.

In a statement made on Tuesday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned that the changes were prompted by “too many mistakes and too much censorship.” A spokesperson clarified that, at present, these modifications are intended solely for the US market.

Reuters, which previously collaborated with Meta on its US fact-checking program, has refrained from commenting on the situation.
