The latest addition to the renowned military shooter series, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, made its debut across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X in October 2024. Unlike many contemporary triple-A titles that focus exclusively on current-generation platforms, the Call of Duty franchise has a tradition of releasing its games across all major systems. Speculation now suggests that the upcoming installment in the series could also be available on both PS4 and Xbox One.
Potential for Call of Duty 2025 on Older Consoles
This information comes from the Call of Duty news outlet, CharlieIntel. According to their sources, Call of Duty 2025 may still be developed for the previous-generation consoles. They reported that the game is being designed to support platforms like PS4 and Xbox One.
“Call of Duty 2025 could still release on PS4 and Xbox One, per sources. Supporting last-gen in 2025 is a wild decision, but the game is in development for the old consoles from what we’ve heard,” CharlieIntel mentioned on X this past Friday.

Although Activision has yet to officially confirm the next installment of Call of Duty for 2025, the likelihood of supporting PS4 and Xbox One seems high, given the substantial active user base on these platforms.
The PS4 has sold over 117 million units as of August 2024. Sony reported last year that the PS4 accounts for about half of all active PlayStation consoles, with 49 million monthly active users. Conversely, the Xbox One has sold approximately 58 million units, but the number of monthly active users on Microsoft’s previous console remains unclear.
By making the next Call of Duty available on these older consoles, the game can tap into a broader audience, capitalizing on the sizeable number of players who have not yet transitioned to the latest hardware.
Though official details about Call of Duty 2025 are still pending, leaked information from a focus group meeting last year indicated that development is underway. Reports suggest it will serve as a direct sequel to Black Ops 2, set in the year 2035, following the events of the 2012 game.
Additionally, the campaign is expected to feature David Mason from Black Ops 2 as the main character, with a narrative that leans into themes of espionage and “informational warfare.”
The previous title in the franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, was released across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms on October 25, 2024.
