OpenAI is rolling out an innovative feature that allows users to interact with various applications directly within ChatGPT. This enhancement is made possible for those software and services that are connected to the newly launched ChatGPT SDK, enabling users to leverage apps to assist in task completion while receiving contextual advice from ChatGPT.
During a recent demonstration, OpenAI showcased the new feature by having an employee utilize ChatGPT to interact with different apps. The presenter initiated a request to Canva to design a poster for a dog-walking business, and after a brief wait, Canva responded with several creative options. Following that, the employee requested a generated pitch deck based on the poster. Additionally, the employee engaged Zillow through ChatGPT to access an interactive map of homes for sale in Pittsburgh, prompting further questions about the listings.
Users can now access a range of apps within ChatGPT, including well-known platforms such as Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. OpenAI plans to expand this selection in the upcoming weeks, with the addition of apps like DoorDash, OpenTable, Target, and Uber. Recently, OpenAI also enabled ChatGPT users to make purchases on Etsy, further enhancing the chatbot’s integration with online platforms.
Developers interested in creating apps for ChatGPT can begin accessing the SDK in preview today. Later this year, they will have the opportunity to submit their apps for review and publication. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also mentioned plans for a directory where users can explore available apps, along with forthcoming monetization guidelines.
