Sony has unveiled a modified version of its PlayStation 5 digital console in Europe, featuring a reduced storage capacity of 825GB Solid-State Drive (SSD) for the same price of €499. This adjustment follows earlier reports, including one from YouTuber Austin Evans, who confirmed the details in a recent teardown video, aligning with claims from gaming analyst billbil-kun.
Originally launched in 2023, the PS5’s slim edition came equipped with a 1TB SSD, surpassing the internal storage of the original model. The digital-only variant was initially priced at $449.99; however, prices increased globally, leading to a current retail price of $499.99 in the U.S. and €499.99 in Europe.
While the updated PS5 model is branded as having 825GB of storage, Evans’ findings revealed that the usable storage is merely 667.2GB, after accounting for the console’s operating system and pre-installed applications. In contrast, the earlier digital-only model with a 1TB SSD offered about 848GB of usable space.
In addition to the reduced storage, the refreshed PS5 features a new matte finish and lightweight components, making it approximately 100 grams lighter than its predecessor. Although Sony has not explicitly detailed the reasons behind the storage change, a recent post from the company cited a “challenging economic environment” for price adjustments. There is currently no indication regarding the potential release of this updated console outside of Europe.
