In a recent update, Google is enhancing its Google Home smart home platform by introducing Gemini. The latest version of the Google Home app, v3.41.50.3, is set to feature a notable redesign, according to findings by Android Authority during their investigation of the app’s code.
While the fundamental layout of the user interface appears largely unchanged, various usability improvements are being implemented to enhance navigation and prioritize Gemini within the app.
Screenshots released by Android Authority, along with a detailed YouTube video, illustrate a new feature called “Ask Home.” This allows users to control devices by typing or voicing their requests and to explore video and home history for detailed activity descriptions. A new “Ask Home” search bar prominently positioned at the top of the app facilitates these functions by opening a separate conversation screen.
Google had previously announced that Gemini will be integrated into its smart speakers and displays, enabling users to issue voice commands in natural language to manage their smart home devices. It is therefore anticipated that this feature will also be available within the Home app.
Additionally, Android Authority noted that the Favorites tab has been renamed to “Home,” and the Devices and Settings tab has vanished from the bottom navigation bar, leaving only three icons. Users will now find Devices through a grid icon located in the Home tab.
Users will have the option to add outdoor air quality and temperature information as a favorite tile, accompanied by updated icons for video and temperature displays on the Home page. This update may signal the launch of new Nest hardware expected next month.
This significant refresh of the app raises hopes that numerous features currently in the Public Preview program will soon become accessible to all users.
