Google has enhanced its Veo 3 AI video generator by introducing support for 1080p resolution and vertical video formats. The updates were detailed in a post on Google’s developer blog, indicating that both Veo 3 and its faster, budget-friendly variant, Veo 3 Fast, can now create videos in a 9:16 aspect ratio suitable for mobile devices and social media platforms.
Developers can enable vertical video generation by specifying the aspectRatio parameter in their API requests at 9:16. This feature is targeted towards app developers using Veo 3, allowing them to tailor their applications accordingly. Additionally, the update raises the maximum resolution for generated videos to 1080p, an upgrade from the earlier cap of 720p, although Neowin reports that this resolution change currently applies only to 16:9 aspect ratio videos.
Google also stated that Veo 3 and Veo 3 Fast are now fully optimized for scalable production within the Gemini API and that the cost for video generation has been reduced. The price for generating video through Veo 3 has decreased to $0.40 per second from $0.75, while Veo 3 Fast sees a drop to $0.15 per second from the prior $0.40. Google demonstrated these functionalities through several example videos created in the updated vertical format, including a clip featuring a rock climber remarking, “Veo 3 is now, like, 50 percent cheaper and higher quality, so go build.”
The introduction of vertical video formats aligns with Google’s earlier announcement in June regarding the planned addition of Veo 3 to YouTube Shorts “later this summer.” By empowering developers with tools to incorporate this format into their applications, there is potential for increased content generated through Veo 3 on popular vertical video platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels, further embedding AI-generated content in users’ feeds.
